Refuse and Recycling
Weekly garbage service for single family residential areas is provided by the Village’s contracted waste hauler, Waste Management. Refuse and recyclables are collected every Thursday. Plastic refuse bags and durable metal or plastic cans with handles are acceptable containers for refuse.
To sign up for refuse and recycling service, please contact Waste Management at 1-800-796-9696
Waste Management Yard Waste Collection
Waste Management’s optional weekly Yard Waste collection program starts at the beginning of April and continues until the end of November. To sign up for this service, please contact Waste Management.
Residents that have limited yard waste may choose to pay on a per-bag or per-can basis. These cans and bags are picked up during regular waste pick up – but must have a sticker attached to be collected. Stickers are available at Village Hall and Ace Hardware in Wauconda, or may be ordered directly from Waste Management. Please ensure that the stickers on the bags or cans (painted with large red X’s) are visible to the street so drivers can readily identify them.
Please Note: Because refuse and yard waste are picked up on the same day, cans containing yard waste should be marked with large red X’s. This will help identify the landscape yard waste to the drivers so your pickup is not inadvertently missed. WASTE MANAGEMENT’S YARD WASTE COLLECTION IS NOT THE SAME SERVICE AS THE VILLAGE’S BRUSH SERVICE PROGRAM.
If you have questions concerning the yard waste collection program, please contact Waste Management directly at 1-800-796-9696.
Electronic Recycling Program
The Village of Wauconda, in cooperation with the Village of Island Lake and Wauconda Township, is proud to offer a residential electronics recycling program. Unwanted household electronics can be recycled through this program to keep them out of landfills. Acceptable items include computers (central processing units, monitors, keyboards and other computer peripherals), televisions, home office equipment (fax machines and printers, etc.) and other appliances and consumer electronics (vacuum cleaners, radios, stereos, etc.). Please note that ‘white goods’ such as stoves, refrigerators, dehumidifiers and air conditioners are not part of this program. Participating individuals must reside in Lake County, and the program can not accept materials from business or industry.
Our Residential Electronics Recycling Collection Plan offers both weekday and weekend drop off times, to allow more opportunity for resident participation.
Part 1 – Saturdays:
Residential Electronics Recycling Collections will be conducted on the first Saturday of each month at the Wauconda Township Facility at 505 W. Bonner Road from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Part 2- Weekdays:
Weekday Residential Electronics Recycling Collections is held Monday through Friday at the Wauconda Public Works Facility, 302 Slocum Lake Road in Wauconda. Operating hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Residents must bring the items into the Public Works Facility and register with the clerk.
Household Chemical Waste Disposal
SWALCO (Solid Waste Agency of Lake County) provides solid waste management programs to Lake County. These programs are aimed at reducing our reliance on landfills through source reduction, recycling and energy recovery.
In general, SWALCO programs help residents dispose of problem wastes, such as household chemical waste (HCW), electronic equipment, and yard waste. Recycling programs are targeted at both commercial and residential markets in order to divert as much solid waste as possible from reaching landfills.
